Thomson Collides With Ludwig At Strikeforce Fresno Debut

August 27, 2006; New York, NY….Top lightweight contenders and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veterans Josh “The Punk” Thomson and Duane “Bang” Ludwig will battle it out in the cage during the Strikeforce mixed martial arts mega-card at Fresno, California’s 14,000 crowd capacity Save Mart Center on Saturday, October 7th.  The victor of the matchup will be granted a shot at Strikeforce’s 155 pound limit championship held by undefeated Gilbert Melendez.

“It’s just another fight to me,” said the 27-year-old Thomson, who made a successful effort in his last start that came against Hawaii’s Harris Sarmiento during the June 9th Strikeforce “Revenge” card at San Jose, California’s HP Pavilion.  In the third and final round of their matchup, Thomson forced Sarmiento into submission with an arm triangle choke.  “Now I’m back on a winning streak and I’m just gonna keep whipping everyone’s ass in Strikeforce.  I just want big money and big name fights.”

Thomson boasts a pair of victories in the UFC octagon and was triumphant in his sole start with Japan’s Pride Fighting Championship last July.  His win over the dangerous Hermes Franca, which came in the form of a majority decision during UFC 46 on January 31, 2004, is still largely considered his best showing to date in the cage.

“I really wanted that fight because he had just beaten one of (my teammates) – Rich Crunkilton,” said Thomson of the defining matchup with Franca.  “I just came in there very well conditioned and I wouldn’t quit.”

A former wrestling star for NCAA Division I Stanford University, Thomson found his calling in life when he discovered mixed martial arts half a dozen years ago.  He has since rounded out his fight game by adopting the lethal striking art of Muay Thai and has gone as far as competing under Muay Thai rules twice.  On both occasions, Thomson asserted his authority easily and stopped his opponent.

Ludwig’s appearance will come two months after the 28-year-old Denver, Colorado native staged another thrilling performance in K-1 competition in Las Vegas, Nevada.  In “Superfight” action during the August 12th “Battle at Bellagio” affair, he was put to the test by a determined Fernando “Cool” Calleros and, after three rounds that were highlighted by heavy exchanges of kicks and punches, the bout was declared a draw.

A high-spirited competitor, Ludwig took hold of the ring announcer’s microphone after the decision was read and asked the crowd if it wished to see another round of action that could help determine a clear-cut winner.  Ringside officials, however, did not permit an extension of the bout.

Thomson-Ludwig Strikeforce

August 27, 2006

With his crowd pleasing, toe-to-toe fighting style that stems largely from his background in Muay Thai, Ludwig, the reigning International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) World Junior Middleweight Muay Thai Champion, has given mixed martial arts fans some memorable moments, including his willful run to victory over Japan’s Genki Sudo during UFC 42.  On January 16th of this year, Ludwig returned to the octagon and stopped Jonathan Goulet in a mere 11 seconds with a hard right hand to the chin that put the Canadian on his back.

Four and a half years ago, Bang was taken under the wing of mixed martial arts legend, Bas Rutten, who observed the young fighter’s talent and fighting spirit during a grappling event in which Ludwig was competing.  A year after the two bonded, Ludwig made his first big mark in mixed martial arts by knocking out former UFC 155 pound limit champion, Jens “Little Evil” Pulver.

While pursuing a major championship in the sport of mixed combat, Ludwig has also maintained a strong presence in the world of stand-up fighting.  In 2002, he captured North America’s first-ever K-1 159 pound limit “J-Max” tournament crown, an achievement that helped him secure future bouts in Japan, where K-1 is headquartered.

Tickets for the October 7th Strikeforce event are on sale at Ticketmaster (559-485-TIXS) and Ticketmaster online ( HYPERLINK "http://www.ticketmaster.com" www.ticketmaster.com) as well as at the Save Mart Center box office and at select Save Mart supermarkets.  Tickets are priced at $201.75, $151.75, $101.75, $76.75, $51.75, and $31.75.

The card will be comprised of 10 mixed martial arts bouts including a headlining matchup between heavyweight sluggers, David “Tank” Abbott and Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello and a featured contest between Wesley “Cabbage” Correira and Ruben “Warpath” Villareal.  All bouts are subject to approval by the California State Athletic Commission.

The Save Mart Center is home to the Fresno State University men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as minor league hockey squad, The Fresno Falcons.

Strikeforce is a world-class mixed martial arts cage fight promotion that, on Friday, March 10th, made history with its “Shamrock vs. Gracie” event, the first sanctioned mixed martial arts fight card in California state history.  The star-studded extravaganza, which pitted legendary champion Frank Shamrock against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Cesar Gracie at San Jose’s HP Pavilion, played host to 18,265 fans, the largest-ever attendance at a mixed martial arts fight card held in North America.

7/21/06-  This Just in- Kimo Leopoldo has been disqualified from tomorrow night's WFA event at the Forum in Los Angeles, due to testing positive for banned substances.  Here's the official release:

Statement from Jeremy Lappen, CEO of the World Fighting Alliance

“The California Athletic Commission has informed the World Fighting Alliance that Kimo Leopoldo has tested positive for a banned substance and therefore is not eligible for his July 22 bout with Bas Rutten at the Forum in Los Angeles.

The WFA is a fighter-first organization, so Kimo’s disqualification is a disappointment for our entire family of fighters. But the positive test is a reminder that the WFA and Mixed Martial Arts is a professional sport, governed by the same rules as other major sports leagues.

This situation, while disappointing, validates the steps we are taking as an organization and a sport to ensure the integrity of competition.  We are currently working to secure another qualified opponent for Bas so he can make his historic return to competitive Mixed Martial Arts on Saturday night.  An announcement on the bout will be forthcoming.”

World Fighting Alliance announces remainder of Fight Card for WFA: King of the Streets on July 22nd.

Rising MMA Stars Collide as Mayhem Miller Takes On Former
“Ultimate Fighter” Lodune Sincaid

LOS ANGELES, June 21, 2006 – Today the World Fighting Alliance (WFA) unveiled the remainder of its fight card for the upcoming WFA: King of the Streets national Pay-Per-View event live from the Forum in Los Angeles on July 22nd. Four additional under card bouts were announced today, each featuring names well recognized and respected within the MMA ranks.
Jason “Mayhem” Miller (14-4-0) vs. Lodune Sincaid (9-2-0)
This bout pits two of the sport’s youngest and most over-the-top personalities against one another. After a successful tour of duty building a name for himself in Icon Sport events in Honolulu, the man they call “Mayhem” brings his one-of-a-kind persona to the WFA to face Lodune Sincaid at King of the Streets. Sincaid, best-known for his role on the first season of Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series, brings a respectable 9-2-0 record into the ring in a bout that will determine which of these rising stars is most poised to take his game to the next level.

Rob McCullough vs. Harris Sarmiento
The man they call “Razor” gets a chance at vengeance as these two face each other for the first time since Sarmiento defeated McCullough two years ago. Since that bout, McCullough’s been a flawless 6-0-0, while Sarmiento’s path has been marked by several defeats. McCullough’s motivation will be for redemption, while Sarmiento knows a victory at WFA: King of the Streets could get his career back on a winning track.

Jorge Oliveira (2-1-0) vs. Marvin Eastman (12-6-0)
This bout features veteran against “up and comer” as the Chute Academy-groomed Oliveira looks to further establish himself in the sport with a victory over MMA veteran Eastman. On July 22nd, Eastman’s sights will be fixed firmly on reclaiming the top-ranked status he once held in the sport, despite the youthful ambitions of Oliveira.

Jose Landi-Jons (21-11-0) vs. TBD
While many North American MMA fans may not be familiar with Landi-Jons, past wins over UFC champion Matt Hughes and Pat Militich should be enough to illustrate the talent and legitimacy of the man many know as “Pele.” The Brazilian submission specialist has 21 career victories and actually has as many victories coming by way of knockout as he does by submission. He looks to etch his name in the minds of North American MMA fans at WFA: King of the Streets.

These four matchups round out an already unparalleled fight card featuring the long-anticipated return of Bas Rutten as he squares off against Kimo, “Rampage” Jackson’s rebirth in North America taking on Matt Lindland, undefeated rising MMA star Lyoto Machida facing Lion’s Den veteran Vernon “Tiger” White, former UFC veteran heavyweights Ricco Rodriguez against Ron Waterman, and Ivan Salaverry taking on Art Santore.

Tickets for “WFA: King of the Streets” at The Forum are available at all Southern California Ticket Master outlets (Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernadino and Ventura Counties), online at Ticketmaster.com or charge by phone at (213) 480-3232, (714) 740-2000, (661) 322-2525 or (805) 583-8700.  The event will also be shown live on pay-per-view television via iNDemand and Dish Network (check local listings for details).

Dish Network To Offer Live Pay-Per-View Broadcast of July 22nd Event at The Forum To Customers Nationwide

LOS ANGELES, CA, June 14, 2006 – The World Fighting Alliance (WFA) – the recently launched mixed martial arts (MMA) organization featuring a “who’s who” lineup of MMA superstars – announced today its signing of pro wrestling superstar and television and film personality Bill Goldberg as its color commentator for the upcoming “WFA: King of the Streets” live pay-per-view broadcast from the Forum in Los Angeles on July 22nd.

Goldberg’s connections to the MMA world run deep. The former WCW World Heavyweight Champion has been a martial arts enthusiast throughout his career in wrestling and television, and has trained for most of his adult life in the art of Muay Thai kickboxing. Goldberg also owns and operates Extreme Power, a Muay Thai training facility for children and adults, as well as competitive fighters in Oceanside, CA. Currently, Goldberg is set to star in a remake of the 1980s martial arts film, “Half Past Dead,” which originally featured martial arts expert-turned film star Steven Seagal. Shooting is scheduled to begin in Los Angeles in July.

“I’ve been passionate about martial arts my entire life through my own Muy Thai training, my Extreme Power martial arts training facility and now through the myriad of relationships I have with the top fighters in the sport of MMA,” said Goldberg. “When the WFA approached me with this opportunity and I saw the lineup of elite MMA stars fighting for the WFA, I knew this was an opportunity to get more involved in the rapid evolution of this sport. The decision was a no-brainer and I’m thrilled about my affiliation with the WFA.”

The WFA also announced a distribution agreement with national satellite television provider Dish Network for “WFA: King of the Streets.” to compliment its existing deal with iN Demand.  The event, broadcast live on July 22nd, will be available to Dish Network customers nationwide through a live pay-per-view broadcast, available on Dish Network for $34.95.  In addition to the Dish Network, “WFA: King of the Streets” will be available live on pay-per-view for cable customers nationwide via iNDemand (check local cable listings for details).
The broadcast will feature a three-man broadcasting team, led by veteran boxing play-by-play commentator Barry Tompkins with Goldberg handling color commentary duties. The WFA is reportedly speaking with several well-known former MMA stars to round out the broadcast team, handling post-fight interviews and analysis in the ring. Details on this final member of the King of the Streets broadcast team will be announced in the weeks to come.

“Goldberg is a legend to millions of Americans and his hard-nosed, raw and aggressive persona is the perfect compliment to what the WFA is all about,” said Jeremy Lappen, CEO of the WFA. “He shares our passion for the sport and we feel his signing simply underscores the credibility of our organization and our commitment to providing a superior entertainment experience. Needless to say, we’re thrilled to have him on board as an ambassador for the WFA.”

Goldberg became a professional wrestler after a standout college football career at the University of Georgia and professional football stints in the World League and a three-year NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons. Goldberg’s success in wrestling was almost instantaneous capturing the WCW U.S. title and the WCW World title (in a historic battle with Hollywood Hulk Hogan) in less than two years. He is inarguably one of the most beloved and revered personalities in the history of professional wrestling.  Goldberg has transitioned into television and film work with roles in feature films including The Longest Yard and Universal Soldier.

There could be no better collision of master musicianship than Mike Patton & Terry Bozzio on the same stage, playing the same off-the-wall music. These are two of the greatest musicians of our time. Both, legends before their own time. Both, extremely underated. The band played 2 amazing sets at The Troubadour in Hollywood, as part of their warm-up for the European tour. 6/20/04- Big news in extreme sports-
UFC 48 "Payback" went off like a bomb! Live from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Saturday June 19th... and though many of you may already know by now, the results are in!
The main events was "The world's most dangerous man" Ken Shamrock against the mighty Kimo.
The underdog still fresh from his loss to Tito Ortiz, Ken dropped Kimo like a sack of potatoes at about :57 into the first round, by a series of knees to the the face, as they clinched on their feet in the center of the Octagon. It was officially ruled a Knock Out after Big John McCarthy stepped in and ended the bout, just as Ken went in for the kill shot. Kimo was out on his feet before he hit even the ground.
During the post fight, which I'll try to get the audio to that on air as soon as possible, Ken Shamrock made it absolutely clear that he is in the best shape of his life and out of retirement. And when taunted by Tito Ortiz right in front of everyone in the Press Room about a re-match, Ken almost jumped over the table and across the room towards Tito, until a few Sherifs charged in to break it up. Let me tell you, that re-match is definitely in the works.

The other main event of the evening was for the Heavyweight Championship title- top contender Tim Silvia, against up-and-coming Frank Mir.
The much, much bigger Silvia opened up with a barrage of punches, providing (the very crafty & much smaller) Mir an opportunity to attempt a strait-arm bar. The struggle continued until the sheer force completely snapped both, the Radius & Ulnar bones in the lower arm of Silvia.
Now get this, without a tapping out at all, Tim Silvia continued to fight until the Ref actually stopped the fight without a tap or submission from either fighter. It was an extremely controversial call, and threw the entire arena into about 5 minutes of complete and & chaos... until the close-ups on the big-screen monitors revealed the actual bones snapping and almost protruding the dudes forearm, validating great call by the Ref, and calming down a once-hostile, Las Vegas-drunken, sold-out crowd. So now it stands clear... the new head on the chopping block - the man to beat - the new UFC Heavyweight Champion is Mr. Frank Mir.

4/11/04- UFC 47 Update-
Tito Ortiz vs. Chuck "the Ice Man" Liddel
Many of you may already know the results by now, but for those of you who do not, this is the official Press Release immediately following the bout:

The fight mixed martial arts fans wanted for almost two years ended at the 38-second mark of the second round tonight when Chuck Liddell unleashed a flurry of punches that put Tito Ortiz down on the canvas and out of Ultimate Fighting Championship 47: It’s On! at Mandalay Bay Events Center before a sellout crowd of 11, 413. It was the first time that Ortiz, the former UFC light heavyweight champion had been knocked out. With Ortiz down and unable to defend himself, referee John McCarthy jumped in and ended it. The official ruling was a technical knockout."

4/4/04- The Fantomas tour has finally kicked off, with a few hitches, I might ad. Their in-store performance at Amoeba music in Hollywood, scheduled for Wednesday March 24th as sort of a pre-tour warm-up show, was most unfortunately cancelled at the last minute due to a major scheduling conflict. As it turns out, Dave Lombardo was busy in the studio still recording the last of the drum tracks for Slayer's new album. It was a bit of a disappointment.. it was a major disappointment! And as a result, Fantomas's first show on the 25th was just a wee bit sketchy. It didn't look like they were all that thrilled to be there. I'm guessing that's why they weren't interested in letting me film that night either. Patton wasn't very engaging to the audience at all. But of course, that's pretty typical for him, anyway.
Note, however- though I didn't get expressed permission to shoot, I was able to get the camera in, and actually got some decent audio of the show. That should be ready to air within the next 2 weeks, so we've got that to look forward to. Live Fantomas audio which can only be heard right here on 30 MINUTES OF BLACK!
Don't get me wrong though. The show was utterly awesome, despite the minor frustrations. They are a phenomenal band and always put on an amazing show. Plenty of old stuff, with a healthy mixture of the new material. And I'm sure the vibe will pick up as the tour continues.
